I like to think of myself as an old soul. From a very early age, I liked wearing $8 velcro shoes from Walmart (b/c they were comfortable), I drove a Crown Victoria (b/c it was comfortable – seriously, have you ridden in one of those things? It’s like driving a cloud.) for most of my high school and college years, and I love shuffleboard. I first picked up the sport around 10 years ago and it’s been a part of me ever since. It’s such a simple premise, yet it takes incredible skill to maintain consistency with shots as well as a very underestimated amount of strategy depending if you are on the offensive or defensive side.
What does this have to do with the ONLY winter sport that matters?
What sport am I even referring to?
Well, since I have a deep passion for shuffleboard, the closest sport on television would be CURLING. Yes, that CURLING. The sport has become more popular from year to year as its coverage grows and will no doubt be a major highlight of this year’s Winter Olympic Games just based on the different fashion choices each team makes. (See below)
If you are one of the many many people that are scratching their heads at the thought of a sport that just looks like throwing a bunch of rocks down an ice alley with the other teammates sweeping up the little ice shavings that the rock leaves behind, YOU ARE WRONG! I must admit, actually having a limited knowledge of the sport makes it more fun to watch because you can find yourself screaming for joy at a great shot just because the commentators are freaking out even though you literally have NO IDEA what’s going on. It’s perfect!
If you need a refresher…
And if you want to practice yelling at the TV and not really knowing why…try this:
So if you have ONE sport to watch this Winter Olympics, don’t let it be Ice Dancing, with its twizzles and high steps, but let it be something that actually matters…CURLING! So get your brooms out, your crazy pants on and let’s hope that the rocks become counters inside the buttons…amiright?
