At the risk of sounding like a broken record, this is another film that I held tightly to the experience and emotion I felt during the first time I saw it and was thinking that upon a rewatch that same feeling would be repeated.
But it was nowhere near the drop-off as some of the previous rewatches this summer. Superbad is still amazingly funny….in parts. To get to those parts, you have to watch the entire movie and that can be cumbersome for some. I understand how that sounds, but what I’m trying to convey is that there are a lot of diatribes and monologues that feature over-the-top acting by an unseasoned cast in between the truly golden and quotable moments. Don’t misunderstand, I enjoy the entire movie it is just that some of those long speeches can be taxing to sit through. Nevertheless, they are still funny in spots.
It kills me to admit that I’ve enjoyed this less than previous viewings. I still laughed really hard at the parts I knew were my favorite, however, it wasn’t the same as before. Superbad is still a solid comedy; not the best, not the worst and needs to be seen at least every 18 months or so out of respect. I am curious as time passes how this movie will change for me upon more viewings. Will I find other parts funny that I hadn’t previously noticed or will the entire film slowly become less and less funny for me. I hope it’s the former not the latter, but time will tell. Either way, I enjoyed this watch and still love this movie.
